Breast Augmentation and Implants: What You Need to Know

Breast Enhancement for size, correction or symmetry is an important decision, but selecting the right implant to give you the best result is critical.  In order to make an informed decision, it is important to understand the different types of implants. This basic guide will answer some of your questions, but a consultation in our offices will best prepare you for the process.

Silicone vs. Saline

The two main types of implants are silicone and saline. Silicone implants have some advantages, as they give the breast a more natural look and feel. Saline, however, carries less risk. If there is a rupture of the implant, saline will simply be absorbed harmlessly into the body. If a silicone implant ruptures, it could cause a number of health problems, and must be addressed immediately. Ruptures are uncommon, however – so if you are looking for a more natural look, silicone may be the way to go.

Shape

There are some differences in the shape of the implants that are used in breast augmentation. Some implants are round, while others have a teardrop shape, or are tapered at both ends. The tapered implants tend to give the most natural look and feel. The biggest difference in the shape of the implant is how it is placed in the breast during surgery. Tapered implants often allow for smaller incisions and an overall less invasive procedure.

Risk

There is some minimal risk with any surgery, and breast augmentation is no different. The surgery itself is not greatly impacted by the type of implants that you choose. There is less risk with some implants than others simply because the incisions may be different. Risk after surgery is lessened with saline implants due to their more natural contents.

If you have been contemplating breast augmentation, contact us today for a consultation. We can discuss your options for implants and help you understand all the differences so you can make an informed decision.
