Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation: What You Need to Know

It is important to understand the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation before undergoing either procedure. In some cases, a breast lift is more desirable than augmentation. A breast lift is also sometimes required in conjunction with a breast augmentation.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also called a maxopexy, is a surgical procedure in which excess tissue is removed to raise and lift the breast into a more desirable shape and height. The procedure may also involve migrating the nipple higher on the breast. A breast lift is becoming more common than augmentation, because it often gives the rejuvenation that patients are looking for without implants.

In some cases, a breast lift or maxopexy may be needed in conjunction with a breast augmentation. If the breast is droopy or the nipple is not on center, these may need to be corrected to give you the look you desire.

What is Breast Augmentation?

A Breast augmentation is when silicone or saline implants are placed within the breast tissue to increase the size of the breast. It is a much more complex surgery with a longer recovery time. Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts may wish to undergo breast augmentation. If you are unhappy with the shape and contour of your breasts, you may want to combine this with a breast lift.
