What is Gynecomastia and What to Do About it

Tampa Gynecomastia Surgery modelIt is a common misconception among women that men are not self-conscious about their appearance. Men can be emotionally and psychologically harmed by changes in their appearance that they cannot control. Like women, men can and should take control of their appearance so they can look and feel their best.

What is Gynecomastia?

One of the problems men might have with their appearance is an enlargement of the breasts. This is called gynecomastia, commonly referred to as male breast reduction surgery. It can be caused by a number of factors, but it is essentially due to a hormonal imbalance. When testosterone and estrogen levels in the body are out of balance, gynecomastia is just one of the conditions that can result.

Gynecomastia is normal in infants, teenage boys, and older men. Males in these age groups have naturally occurring hormonal changes that can cause breasts to enlarge. The condition can occur in any age group for other reasons, including certain medical conditions and use of some pharmaceuticals.

First Thing First

When you first start noticing the signs of gynecomastia, you should talk to your doctor about what may be causing it. If you take medications for any health conditions, particularly anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications, you should review your prescription list with your doctor to see if that could be the cause. You may be able to change or discontinue medications and eliminate the problem.

If your gynecomastia is caused by other factors that cannot be easily controlled, such as aging, kidney failure, or hyperthyroidism, there may be no way to reverse the effects through traditional medicine. Your doctor can review your medical history to help you determine the cause of gynecomastia and determine if medical treatment is an answer.

What to Do When Gynecomastia Persists

If you are unable to control the factors that led to gynecomastia, you do not have to continue to suffer. Your self-esteem and confidence are important to your overall health. The same surgical interventions used in breast reductions for women can be used to treat gynecomastia. The end result will make you feel manly and confident.
