Male Breast Reduction

The term “gynecomastia” means enlarged male breasts, and plastic surgeons treat it through a procedure called male breast reduction. The goal of treatment is to reduce the patient’s oversized breasts and make the chest look flatter, firmer and more classically masculine. Male breast reduction not only improve the patient’s appearance, it can also improve his confidence and overall quality of life.

Gynecomastia Surgery Candidates

Ideally, candidates for gynecomastia surgery in Tampa and Port Richey are men in good physical health. They usually have experienced some psychological side effects due to enlarged breasts — either low confidence or self-esteem and sometimes depression. In some cases, gynecomastia surgery may be performed on a teenager if their breast growth has stabilized. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.

The best candidates for surgery understand the (rare and infrequent) risk of complications and have reasonable expectations of the surgical outcomes. They have clearly communicated their ideal results and have a positive outlook on surgery.

Dr. Landon meets with all gynecomastia surgery candidates during an informational consultation. During the appointment, he performs a physical evaluation, noting the degree of correction necessary and the patient’s skin tone/elasticity. Dr. Landon also discusses the procedural steps, outlines his planned approach and explains what the patient can expect. If the patient decides to schedule surgery, Dr. Landon and our team will provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions.

What Happens During Surgery?

Male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis at Dr. Landon’s fully accredited, on-site operating suite. Prior to surgery, Dr. Landon will make marks on the patient’s breasts to guide him as he performs the operation. Anesthesia will be administered for complete patient comfort.

To begin, Dr. Landon makes the surgical incisions on the breasts, typically around the bottom half of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The length of the incision depends on the patient’s anatomy. Then, he will remove excess breast tissue via surgical excision and/or liposuction. The surgical technique(s) that Dr. Landon uses depends on whether the patient has excess glandular and/or fatty tissue. Glandular tissue must be surgically excised, and fatty tissue can be removed by liposuction techniques.
Dr. Landon will also remove excess skin and re-drape the remaining skin more tightly over the chest. If the patient has requested, Dr. Landon may reduce the size of enlarged areolas. Finally, he will close the incisions with sutures and place a compression bandage over the chest.

Recovering from Gynecomastia Surgery

Post-operative bruising, swelling and tenderness are common and temporary side effects. Patients will need to follow detailed aftercare instructions given by Dr. Landon, and return to the office within a day or two for their first follow-up visit.

The first few days of recovery are the most intense. Patients should rest at home and refrain from lifting the arms or any vigorous activity. Pain or discomfort can be controlled with oral medication. Pain tolerance varies by patient. Short walks are encouraged for proper circulation, but more strenuous activity is ill-advised.

During the follow-up visits, Dr. Landon will provide a specific timeline for returning to work, exercise and other activities. He will also provide suggestions for minimizing any scarring.
