It’s incredibly common to hear about women who undergo procedures to make their breasts bigger or smaller, but what about men?

Gynecomastia is an embarrassing condition that refers to enlarged male breasts. Many men feel too self-conscious about their chests to go shirtless on the beach or wear tight-fitting shirts, but they don’t realize that gynecomastia is actually straightforward to reverse with male breast reduction surgery. Here is everything you ever wanted to know about gynecomastia but were too afraid to ask!

Gynecomastia Causes Enlarged Breast Tissue in Men

If you have gynecomastia, you may have an endocrine system disorder resulting in an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone hormones in your body. Newborns, boys going through puberty, and older men all have the potential to develop gynecomastia due to fluctuating hormone levels. Gynecomastia also occurs as a result of certain medications both prescribed and recreational. The swollen breast gland tissue and breast tenderness that marks gynecomastia isn’t dangerous, but it can be embarrassing and difficult to endure.

Male Breast Reduction Reverses Gynecomastia

After being formally diagnosed, gynecomastia can be treated and eliminated through male breast reduction surgery. The best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are adult men who are in good physical health and have experienced psychological side effects of enlarged breasts, like low confidence and depression. Teenagers can be approved on a case-by-case basis for gynecomastia surgery if their breast growth has stabilized.

The Process of Gynecomastia Surgery

Our Tampa Male breast reduction is completed using anesthesia for patient comfort. A plastic surgeon makes a surgical incision on each breast, typically around the bottom half of the dark skin surrounding the nipple. Excess glandular tissue is surgically excised through each incision, while fatty tissue is removed by liposuction techniques.

After each breast contains only the appropriate amount of breast tissue, the surgeon then removes excess skin and re-drapes the remaining skin more tightly over the chest. Both incisions are closed with sutures, and a compression bandage is wrapped over the chest.
